When Your Period Hurts, Your Body Is Telling You Something
One of the most common reasons women come to me for support is pain in their menstrual cycles.
Cramping that stops them from their work or school, headaches, nausea, exhaustion.
The kind of pain that makes them cancel plans and curl up in bed.
And almost every one of them tells me the same thing.
“I asked my doctor about it, and they said it’s normal.”
Or: “Here’s some birth control.”
Now, birth control can absolutely reduce menstrual pain. Many women experience relief while they’re on it. And sometimes that relief is needed.
But here’s what we have to understand: The pain is not random when your body produces pain every month, it is signaling something.
The question is not just, “How do we stop the pain?” But, “why is your body producing pain in the first place?”
Because birth control, while it may suppress ovulation and reduce symptoms, doesn’t actually resolve the underlying reason your body was in pain. Instead, it often masks it.
And I’ve seen this pattern countless times: A woman goes on birth control in her teens or early twenties for painful periods. The pain improves. Years go by. Then she decides she wants to have a baby. She comes off birth control…. and the pain is back.
Because the root cause was never addressed. So what might be underneath menstrual pain?
From an herbal and energetic perspective, pain often signals stagnation, a lack of movement. In traditional systems of medicine, stagnation in the pelvis can create tension, constriction, and cramping. When blood and energy don’t flow smoothly, discomfort follows. Sometimes this stagnation is physical. Lack of movement. Tight pelvic muscles. Chronic sitting. Shallow breathing. Stress that lives in the hips and abdomen.
Sometimes it’s biochemical. Magnesium deficiency is incredibly common, and magnesium is essential for muscle relaxation. Without enough of it, uterine muscles contract more intensely and painfully.
Sometimes pain is driven by inflammation. If the body is already inflamed, from diet, stress, gut dysfunction, blood sugar instability, the inflammatory cascade during menstruation can feel exaggerated. Prostaglandins, the compounds that help the uterus contract and shed its lining, can become overly active. And that can translate into intense cramping.
Sometimes thyroid imbalance, adrenal strain, or blood sugar dysregulation amplify cycle pain.
Sometimes unresolved stress keeps the nervous system on high alert, making pain perception stronger and recovery slower.
The point is: menstrual pain has many different root causes.
And when we only suppress ovulation without asking why the pain exists, we miss the opportunity to truly support the body.
This doesn’t mean that managing pain is wrong. Relief & comfort matters. A woman should not have to suffer every month.
But we can do both. We can address the pain, and we can investigate the root cause.
In my practice, that means looking at the whole picture:
- Nervous system tone.
- Inflammation patterns.
- Nutrient status.
- Movement and circulation.
- Stress load.
- Digestive health.
- Energetics and constitution.
When we support those layers, the cycles begin to regulate, the intensity softens, and the body doesn’t have to shout anymore.
If you’ve been told your painful periods are “just normal,” I want you to hear this:
- Common does not mean normal.
- Pain is information.
- And you deserve to be listened to, not silenced.
If you’d like to learn more about how to address the root causes of menstrual pain, while also learning practical ways to support and reduce discomfort, I invite you to join me for my free Women’s Health Intro Class.
In this class, I’ll teach you:
- Why menstrual pain happens
- The most overlooked root causes
- How stress, inflammation, and nutrients affect your cycle
- When birth control helps, and what it doesn’t fix
- How to support your body naturally and intelligently
Because your cycle shouldn’t feel like something you have to survive.
It can become something you understand.
