While there’s no single “known cause” of lipedema, one consistent pattern many women experience is that it tends to worsen during key hormonal shifts—puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.
I definitely saw this in my own life. Looking back, I now recognize the early signs beginning around puberty. I started gaining weight disproportionately on my buttocks and around my knees. But because I was otherwise thin, it wasn’t particularly noticeable at the time.
Hormones, Stress, and a Lipedema Flare
The major shift happened after my second pregnancy. I experienced significant hormonal imbalances during that time, compounded by a miscarriage between my first and second child (only 20 months apart). It was an emotional and physically stressful season.
If you’ve read my other writings on this, you know I believe stress is a major factor when it comes to hormone-related conditions. When the body is under stress, it prioritizes cortisol production over sex hormones—something I refer to as “stress stealing your hormones.” This hormonal disruption can create the perfect storm for conditions like lipedema to worsen.
Fast forward to menopause: I actually sailed through the transition fairly smoothly. But once I had gone a full 18 months without a menstrual cycle, I stopped taking my hormone-balancing herbs. Not long after, I started noticing soreness creeping back into my legs—something I hadn’t experienced in a while.
I returned to my herbal protocol for hormone support, and the discomfort started to improve. For me, that confirmed how deeply connected hormone health is to managing lipedema symptoms.
Herbal & Nutritional Support for Hormones
If you’re dealing with lipedema or suspect hormone imbalances are contributing to your symptoms, here’s a snapshot of foundational support that I often recommend:
Herbal Allies
- Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus): Especially helpful for low progesterone and high estrogen. I typically dose 3–5 ml in the morning, afternoon, and before bed.
- Sarsaparilla: Pairs well with Chaste Tree for hormonal modulation.
- Black Cohosh: Great for low estrogen and high progesterone. Start slow (can cause headaches) and increase gradually to around 3 ml/day.
- Blue Cohosh: Useful in combination with Black Cohosh when cycles are absent or irregular.
Nutrients That Matter
- Vitamin B6: Supports hormone balance across the board.
- Magnesium: 800–1000 mg daily. Choose magnesium citrate if constipated or glycinate/malate if you lean toward loose stools.
- DIM or Indole-3-Carbinol: Helps reduce excess estrogen levels.
Herbal Infusions for Daily Support
- Nettle: Nutrient-rich and supports detox and inflammation.
- Red Clover: Contains phytoestrogens that help modulate both high and low estrogen.
- Dandelion Root: Supports liver function and hormone clearance.
