Lifestyle Strategies to Support Lipedema: A Holistic Approach

A foundational goal of holistic lipedema care is to improve both lymphatic and cardiovascular health, as these systems are deeply interconnected in reducing inflammation, promoting detoxification, enhancing circulation, and supporting tissue integrity.

1. Supporting Lymphatic and Cardiovascular Flow

The lymphatic system is a key detoxification pathway, transporting waste, immune cells, and interstitial fluid, while the cardiovascular system delivers oxygen and nutrients. In lipedema, both systems can become sluggish or burdened. Supporting flow improves resilience and reduces the load on tissues.

  • Compression Therapy: Compression garments stimulate the movement of lymph and venous blood return. By reducing stagnation, they relieve pressure on blood vessels and minimize edema, enhancing overall circulation and reducing pain.
  • Dry Brushing: Brushing the skin in the direction of lymphatic flow encourages superficial lymphatic drainage, promoting immune function and reducing tissue congestion. The gentle stimulation also increases capillary circulation in the skin.
  • Vibration Therapy: Whole-body vibration platforms engage muscles and stimulate lymphatic and venous return. The rhythmic motion supports vascular elasticity and peripheral circulation, which are crucial in lipedema-affected areas.
  • Red Light Therapy: Helps reduce inflammation, improve mitochondrial function, and enhance microcirculation—benefiting both vascular and lymphatic systems.
  • Pneumatic Compression Therapy: These sequential air pressure devices mechanically move lymphatic fluid and venous blood. Regular use helps reduce fibrotic tissue buildup and enhances vascular return from the limbs.
    • Air-C Leg Massager by Reathlete (cheaper at walmart.com)
    • Getting insurance to pay for these is difficult. See a lymph massage specialist to see about getting paid through insurance. I’ve used the above with my clients, though as an affordable option.

2. Movement to Build Muscle, Boost Circulation, and Stimulate Lymph Flow

Movement is not about calorie-burning for lipedema, but about enhancing fluid dynamics, muscle tone, and metabolic health.

  • Rebounding and Pumping Movements: This is where I like to start for those who are not currently active. Activities like rebounding (mini-trampoline) provide vertical movement that “pumps” the lymphatics and encourages venous return, as a manual assist to the body’s circulatory system.
  • Lymphatic Yoga: This targeted form of yoga uses breath, inversion, and gentle movement to encourage lymph return and improve circulation, especially in the extremities.
  • Strength Training: Resistance exercises promote lean muscle mass, which naturally helps pump lymphatic and venous blood. Strength training helps the circulatory return from the lower body.
  • Cardiovascular Exercise:
    • Walking: Regular walking enhances peripheral circulation, builds stamina, and supports lymphatic drainage through consistent muscle engagement.
    • Cycling: A low-impact option that supports blood flow and joint mobility while protecting affected tissues.
    • Pilates: Focused, low-impact movement strengthens the core and supports diaphragmatic breathing, enhancing both lymph and blood flow.
  • Qi Gong & Tai Chi: These gentle martial arts emphasize breath, posture, and intentional movement. They support lymphatic health through smooth, continuous motion and aid cardiovascular regulation by reducing sympathetic nervous system overdrive.

3. Emotional Support and Nervous System Regulation

Lipedema is not only physical—it deeply affects emotional well-being. Chronic discomfort, fatigue, and misunderstanding by practitioners can result in anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

My Personal Routine for Supporting Lipedema

Here’s the daily routine I try to stick to—it’s made a huge difference for me in managing lipedema and supporting my lymphatic and cardiovascular health.

In the morning, I start with a 15-minute walk as part of my workout, which also includes weightlifting to build strength and muscle tone. I make sure to jump on the trampoline for at least 2 minutes—it might not seem like much, but I believe it helps stimulate lymph flow and circulation in a big way.

Before each shower, I take the time to dry brush, always moving toward my heart to encourage lymphatic drainage. After my shower, I apply herbal topicals, nourishing the tissues and supporting lymph and blood flow.

In the evening, I usually spend 10 minutes on the vibration plate to stimulate lymph flow and circulation, followed by using the continuous pneumatic air leg pumps, which help move lymphatic fluid and support vascular return.

Prior to bed, I do my 4-7-8 and Buteyko breathing techniques.

Of course, I also stay consistent with my herbal protocol and follow a strict anti-inflammatory diet to reduce systemic inflammation and support overall health.

I feel like all of this has really kept the pain at bay, and honestly, I believe it’s helped keep the lipedema from progressing. I do think it has improved as it doesn’t hurt anymore, and despite doctors saying it doesn’t go away… I’m not sure.

For those living with lipedema, lifestyle strategies focused on supporting both the lymphatic and cardiovascular systems are foundational. These two systems work in tandem to clear waste, reduce swelling, oxygenate tissues, and regulate inflammation. Through herbal allies (read more here), diet (read more here), and therapeutic movement, we can empower individuals with lipedema to reclaim their health and move forward with hope.

Coming up we’ll talk about hormones and their effects on lipedema, and how to support your hormones.
