In keeping with my topic on sleep as a root cause of many diseases. I like this statement by Casey Means in her address to the RFK Roundtable…. “Five nights of sleep deprivation can cause full-blown pre-diabetes.” Check out this great talk here: https://youtu.be/6wOOhvZISwI?si=Poh6ewO4renzqGz3
Of course, this is reversible… get more sleep! Lack of sleep affects so much!
I discuss root causes in my Family Herbalist Course. At each meeting, we discuss the root causes of body system diseases. It’s nice to hear someone else talk about the root causes.
The leading Root Causes of disease are…
Sleep Debt
Stress
Nutritional Deficiencies
Toxic overload
Physical Trauma
Here’s how this can play out:
You go to the Doctor, and they tell you that you have high blood pressure.
They then give you medication to lower your blood pressure.
This certainly helps, but is that addressing the root cause? Stress can affect your biological terrain. It puts pressure on your heart and veins, causing high blood pressure. This comes in many different forms.
I was suffering from High Blood Pressure at one point and couldn’t figure out why. I went to see my Herbalist Mentor, Thomas Easley, and he looked over my whole history and said, “You’re not eating enough.” I didn’t believe him. He convinced me to count my calories, and overall, I had been consuming around 900-1100 calories Mon. – Fri. and around 1300-1600 calories during the week. At my height, weight, and activity level, I should have been consuming around 1800 calories a week “to lose weight.”
On top of that, I was also periodically fasting. I was not making up for the calories lost on my fasting days either, so I had a huge calorie deficit. I had been eating like this for years!
I couldn’t lose weight, I couldn’t sleep, and I was super cranky!!! I started slowly increasing my calories, and my blood pressure went back to normal, and I stopped having what I called “freak out moments” with my poor family! Wow!
My body was stressed from a lack of food and nutrients, and it caused my blood pressure to increase. About a year later, my blood pressure went back up when I was going through a highly stressful time. I was able to “manage” my blood pressure with herbs, but as soon as my stressful event passed, I no longer needed to “manage” my blood pressure with herbs.
What is Your Root Cause?
Stress affects the body, causing disease and high blood pressure. These are two examples of Root causes causing a disease. Just getting medication and not dealing with the root causes would not have solved my disease it would have just “managed” it. Then, I likely would have had further complications from the medications of blood pressure medication if I had taken that route.
