Is your Identity in Your Illness? Or in Christ?
When Illness Becomes an Identity and How the Limbic System Keeps Us Stuck
Chronic illness has a way of slowly reshaping how we see ourselves.
“I have these symptoms.” Is how it innocently starts
Then it becomes: “I’m dealing with this condition.”
And before we realize it, it can shift into:
“This is who I am.”
But Scripture tells us something very different.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) – While we won’t get our “new bodies” till heaven we have this hope to look forward to.
Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – This is my favorite… One of the reasons I do what I do is so Christians feel better so they can serve the Lord the way they want to.
Colossians 3:10: “And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” – Sometimes we just need reminded when we don’t like how are bodies are working “We were created in His image”. When we don’t like what we are then we are not liking what God created.
So why is it so hard to let go of an illness-based?
The Limbic System: Where Survival Meets Identity
The limbic system is the part of the brain responsible for threat detection, memory, emotion, and survival. When someone goes through prolonged stress, trauma, or chronic symptoms, the limbic system can get “stuck” in a chronic stress response often fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.
In this state, the brain is constantly scanning for danger.
Symptoms become information.
Your body becomes something you need to monitor.
And your identity quietly forms around your survival.
Over time, the brain wires together and says:
- “I am fragile.”
- “My body is unsafe.”
- “I need to constantly manage, control, or explain my illness.”
It’s neurobiology doing what it was designed to do: protect you. But protection is not the same as healing.
When Illness Identity Hijacks the Nervous System
Many people don’t realize that constantly thinking, talking, researching, or identifying with illness keeps the limbic system activated.
This can look like this:
- Defining yourself by diagnoses or sensitivities
- Living according to how you feel that day
- Constantly monitoring symptoms for meaning
- Finding belonging primarily in “sick spaces” (such as facebook groups about your illness)
- Joining many “support groups”
- Feeling unsafe imagining a healthy future
The nervous system hears all of this as: “I’m still in danger.”
And when the limbic system stays activated, the body remains stuck in survival mode, no matter how many supplements, diets, or protocols are tried.
The goal is not to deny symptoms or pretend trials don’t exist.
The goal is to shift our mindset:
Acknowledging the trial without identifying with it.
Scripture calls us to renew the mind by truth.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
Colossians 3:1-2 – “Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.”
Your illness is a chapter in your life.
It is not your name or who you are.
It is not your calling in life.
Your future is not set – God is ultimately in control.
Healing often begins when the nervous system learns that:
- You are not in danger
- Your body is not broken
- Your identity is secure in Christ
- And your story is still being written not set in stone
Why Limbic System Retraining Is So Powerful
Limbic system retraining works because it:
- Calms the chronic stress response
- Interrupts fear-based thought loops
- Rebuilds safety in the brain and body
- Shifts focus from symptoms to who you are in Christ
- Restores joy, connection, and peace, often before symptoms change
We are not just “thinking positively.” We are rewiring survival patterns while anchoring your identity in truth and Christ.
The body has space to heal when the the nervous system calms down.
If you feel like:
- Your health has started to define you
- You’re exhausted from constantly managing symptoms
- You love Jesus but feel stuck in fear or vigilance
- You’re doing “all the right things” but not moving forward
You don’t need to try harder.
You may simply need help retraining your limbic system, in a way that honors both your body and your faith.
I walk with clients through this exact process: calming the nervous system, rewiring stress patterns, and reconnecting identity to Christ rather than illness.
Your body is not the enemy and you were never meant to live in survival mode
Your identity is secure in Christ, even in the midst of a trial.
If you’re ready to explore what healing could look like beyond symptom management, I’d love to help.
